Washington DC: USGPO, 1888. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. 15pp, quarto. Drop-title. Neatly removed from a nonce volume, folded to octavo size. 11.5" x 9" Stewart (1827-1909), American lawyer and politician, left Yale University in 1850 to join the Gold Rush to California, soon moving on from San Francisco to begin mining in Nevada City, California. By 1860, he had gone on to Virginia City, Nevada, where he helped develop the Comstock Lode and took part in drafting a constitution for the new state of Nevada (1864). By 1903, he was one of the richest men in the Senate, a silver-mine owner with estimated net worth of 25 million dollars. Beyond money matters, he is recognized as the author of the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."
