About This Item

London: Collins, 1957. A near Fine unmarked copy which has a strip of age toning to endpapers with dustjacket which has a repaired closed tear and is not price clipped. 320 pages. In his first book devoted exclusively to music for twelve years, Neville Cardus ranges at large over the music scene, which he has described with such grace in the columns of the Manchester Guardian and elsewhere. Starting with an appreciation of Toscanini, he writes of other conductors, including his favourite, Sir Thomas Beecham, and of the status and function of the conductor in a modern symphony concert. Next he turns to composers, writing with special force of Mahler, Strauss, Mozart, Elgar and contemporary English composers. In a stimulating and witty section about Opera, he recalls his visit to Vienna. Finally he considers the principles which lie - or should lie - behind musical criticism. B2B. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
