This was originally published in 1882 by Harper & Brothers; the most recent copyright date is 1910; this Grosset & Dunlap edition is a later, undated reprint, circa 1940s. This is from the publisher's Famous Stories for Young People series. William Osborne Stoddard (1835-1925) was an American journalist, inventor and author. He once served as a private secretary to Abraham Lincoln. In addition to his other writings, he wrote 76 children's books. This story is about two girls, raised as sisters -- one a captive white girl and the other the daughter of an Apache chief. When some magazines are found, Rita vaguely remembers her childhood and knows that these magazines are ''talking leaves''. The story of the girls intersects with two other white captives from another tribe -- a man and boy.
