About This Item

NY: Macmillan, 1947. First Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First printing of this Pulitzer Prize winner, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Owner name on front endpaper; interior pages are slightly browning at edges as is usual with this book. The jacket has two tiny chips along the top edge, and a larger (about 1/4") chip at the bottom of the spine. The spine of the jacket is just slightly sunned, but the colors of the illustration which wraps from the front panel around the spine are bright and sharp. The $3.00 price is vertical at the top of the front flap. A much nicer copy than usually found of Michener's first work of fiction.

Synopsis

Tales of the South Pacific is a Pulitzer Prize winning collection of sequentially related short stories about World War II, written by James A. Michener in 1946. The stories were based on observations and anecdotes he collected while stationed as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands (now known as Vanuatu). The skipper of PT-105 met Michener while stationed at the PT boat base on Tulagi in the Solomon Islands.
