Baltimore : F. D. Benteen; New Orleans: W. T. Mayo, 1847. . 2 ll. first and final pages blank. Folio, disbound, gutter showing evidence of previous pamphlet binding Plate mark 1191. At the head of the title is the notation: "Virginia Minstrels No. 14. No copy located outside North Carolina or Virginia. Found at: the University of Virginia, William & Mary, the Library of Virginia and UNC at Chapel Hill, and Duke. The wording and music are not those of the late state song of Virginia, the words declaim the longings of an old black oysterman to be back on a scow raking up oysters. There are no references to slavery, his employer, nor does it contain any "sensitive" or non-p.c. expressions or words. It became a very popular song among Confederate troops in the Civil War. It is thought by many that Bland certainly had this 1840s' minstrel song in mind when in 1878, he wrote "Carry Me Back..."
