Pierre-Antoine Tabeau wrote his journal as a report for the authorities of Spanish Louisiana, from 1803 to 1805, while he lived on a cedar island in the Missouri River 1200 miles north of what is now St. Louis. Tabeau records his business dealings (related to the fur trade) with Native Americans who lived on the Upper Missouri, and his life on the frontier. A beautiful copy.
