Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, showing a bird's-eye view of Sydney Harbour in approximately 1857, from lithograph by F. C. Terry. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white contemporary illustrations and black-and-white photographs throughout the text. Blue coloured cloth boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Bumping and softening to the backstrip edges and bumping to the book corners. Shelf wear to the lower book edges. Browning of the text block edges. A previous owner has cut out a rectangular piece from the half title page, 3 inches down from the top page edge. The piece cut out measures 3 inches x 2 inches x 3 inches. Light age toning of the internal text. Illustrated dustwrapper, the same illustration as for frontispiece, with green and white insert to the front panel and backstrip and within those inserts black titles. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the backstrip edges. Heavy rubbing and creasing to the top dustwrapper edge and lighter rubbing to the lower dustwrapper edge. Heavy rubbing to all creases of the dustwrapper and the dustwrapper panels show handling marks and browning. The rear dustwrapper panel also shows yellowing. The lower backstrip edge has a library sticker adhered. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. The verso of the dustwrapper shows light browning and staining. A documented history of Sydney from 1788 to 1960 using (by and large) contemporary citizens, who were eye-witnesses, observers and critics, documents and memoirs.  Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
