Tokyo: Hasegawa, No Date, Circa 1908-1910. 3 Books (5 X 7"). Hand-made and printed. Padded, pictorial and textured crepe-paper binding; double fold pages , colored wood-block illustrations; printed on Hosho paper (made from inner bark of Mulberry tree). Written by Japanese authors in the Chinese Style. Blue cloth slip case has wear; ivory closures present. Volumes are in beautiful condition with only a few minor flaws: two tiny light brown spots on one page of Volume 1; a few pages have miniscule (5mm) folding marks to top edge corner; text block partially unglued from back strip of Volume 3. Volume 1 contains poems from The Kokinshiu, a famous anthology of Japanese poems first compiled in 906.A.D. Volume 2 contains poems not later than 906 A.D. Volume 3 contains poems, sword and love songs from other centuries. There is a post scriptum in each book with explanations of the themes and vocabulary and identifying these poems as Tanka, or short unrhymed poems of thirty-one syllables.Rare as complete set with case and in this condition.
