New York: Pantheon, 1951. First American Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Printing ("First published 1939" on copyright page, but actually 1951). 8vo: 316pp. Publisher's navy blue cloth spine lettered in yellow, yellow paper-covered boards titled in black, yellow typographic dust jacket printed in black and priced $3.00. Absolutely Fine, square, tight and bright (probably unread); Fine jacket slightly toned to flap folds. An absolutely exemplary example. The true first edition, published by Longmans in 1939, is a legendary rarity, though Graham Greene, comparing At Swim both to Tristram Shandy and Ulysses, had the text in mind when he called it "a book in a thousand." Burgess 99, p. 27. O'Nolan's first novel concerns a "student who is writing a novel about an author, also writing a novel, whose characters begin to write about him. The frame for At Swim's many narratives is an autobiographical portrait of the artist as a young student in 1930s Dublin. Like James Joyce's Stephen Dedalus [Joyce said At Swim contains 'the true comic spirit'], the student is fond of expounding his literary theories and puts them into practice in the manuscript he is composing. This manuscript forms the greater part of At Swim, but it is regularly interrupted by the student's 'biographical reminiscences' (and other digressions). . . . The result is a farrago of literary styles . . . The rationale behind this curious structure is impeccably modern (if not exactly modernist). While still in university, O'Nolan had collaborated with some friends on what they called a 'ready-made' novel, Children of Destiny. It was to be a novel produced by assembly-line, each contributor taking a chapter and filling it to the utmost with the fictional clichés that would guarantee a best-seller. Children of Destiny was never completed and did not survive, but At Swim-Two-Birds certainly inherited its cut-and-paste philosophy." (Literary Encyclopedia) "At Swim-Two-Birds is probably a masterpiece. . . . It is a very Irish book and very funny. But it still awaits the popularity it deserves." (Burgess) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

London: Hogarth Press, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Impression of these "Brilliant sketches of a society in decay" (Orwell). 8vo: 317,[1]pp. Publisher's coarsely woven oatmeal-colored cloth, spine stamped crimson with matching top-stain. Near Fine, cloth and edges dust-soiled, lettering slightly faded, but pages clean, tight and bright. According to Woolmer (451), only 3350 copies were printed. Connolly 86. A series of six loosely interconnected character sketches that unfold against the backdrop of the doomed Weimar Republic. Despite Isherwood's disclaimer, Goodbye to Berlin is firmly rooted in his biography; all the principle characters were inspired by people he had known. Isherwood originally envisioned a sweeping Tolstoyan novel combining the characters from Goodbye to Berlin and Mr. Norris Changes Trains (in fact, both novels are often packaged as The Berlin Stories and both were later adapted for stage and film, most memorably in the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret… Read More

London: Michael Joseph, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression of the author's second novel, basis of the audio drama Breaking Point, starring Michael Kitchen. Crown 8vo (183 x 118mm): 238pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket by Trevor Denning, priced 16s. Someone is trying to destroy the lives of jockeys all over England. Francis was himself a steeplechase jockey, winning more than 350 races and becoming champion jockey of the British National Hunt. In 1956, as jockey to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, he rode Devon Loch in the Grand National. On the final straight, in front of the royal box just 40 yards from the winning post and five lengths ahead, Devon Loch collapsed. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
