Birmingham, AL: Mafundi Defense Committee, 1977. Four-panel brochure, 8.5x7 inches, some toning, penciled checkmark and date of June 1977, together with an 8.5x11 inch mimeographed letter detailing the precarious funding of his defense and asking for contributions, signed in pen. Mafundi, born Richard Lake, was a locally prominent critic of racist misconduct by the Birmingham police, who were infiltrated by the KKK, often taking notes at the scene of arrests; he argues here that this led the police to frame him on drug and weapon charges. He was an organizer in the Committee for Prisoner Support in Birmingham, Families for Action, African People's Survival Committee and the Atmore-Holman Brothers Defense Committee. In total he spent more than three decades in prison, dying behind bars in 2018.
