About This Item

(Boston): Boston Public Library/Society of Printers, 2001. Octavo. One of 500 copies. Thirty-two pages of color and black & white illustrations from photographs. The story of Dorothy Abbe's contributions to printing, book design, typography, photography, writing, and teaching is gathered from her archives at the Boston Public Library and told by Anne Bromer. The book covers her early years as a book designer at several university presses, her life in the household of William Addison and Mabel Dwiggins, the joint publishing venture between Abbe and Dwiggins, as well as her self-taught venture into portrait and landscape photography, and the publication of her two important texts: The Dwiggins Marionettes and Stenciled Ornaments. Bromer also explores Abbe's relationship with Dwiggins and her fierce protection of his work. Typography and design by John Kristensen of Firefly Press; printed letterpress by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Press. As new.
