About This Item

Longmans, Green, and Co. London. 1898. FIRST EDITION of Churchill's rare first book. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.3 inches). Later state with the errata slip at the front of the book and publishers adverts dated 3/98. Frontispiece portrait and 6 maps. One of the folding maps is frayed to the blank margin. A clean and tight copy in the original Publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering to the front board and spine. Black coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper. Cloth is rubbed to the edges and the corners are bumped. Inner hinges still firm and without any of the cracking often found. Overall a very good copy of this famous book. ------ Based on his exploits with the Malakand Field Force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897, as first reported by him in the Daily Telegraph. The publication was arranged by Churchill's cousin as he was still in India. ---- Cohen A1.1.a. Woods A1a.
