About This Item

New York City, NY: Ecco/HarperCollins Publishers, 2008. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Ecco/HarperCollins Publishers, 2008. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 566 pages. Rare David Wroblewski collectible set. Pristine copies of the First Hardcover Edition and the First Softcover Edition, both signed by David Wroblewski. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The First-State DJ is in thick uncoated stock paper. The DJ of all other subsequent printings is in thinner (that is, cheaper) stock paper that is heavily coated ("laminated"), particularly the inside flaps. The difference between the First Edition and the Oprah Variant has been noted by many dealers. But the First- and Second-state DJ's have not been noted as much. The First Softcover Edition does not have the "Oprah Book Club" slug and should not be confused with the latter edition. It comes with valuable "bonus" materials, indicated as such on the front cover as "P. S. ": An eighteen-page Interview with David Wroblewski called "A Boy and His Dogs", a List of Canine Classics, and a two-page Biography. None of them appears in the First Hardcover Edition; they all appear in book form for the very first time, and illuminate the novel. Presents David Wroblewski's "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle". His breakthrough novel. "A classic coming-of-age story with an ironic twist. Sustained by a momentum that has the crushing inevitability of Fate, the propulsive narrative will have readers sucked in all the way through the breathtaking final scenes" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" set for David Wroblewski collectors. This copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing/First-State DJ is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the title page by the author: "David Wroblewski 7/30/08". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a copy of the First Softcover Edition/First Printing, also very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by the author. The Softcover does not have the "Oprah Book Club" slug and should not be confused with the latter edition. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed set thus. One of the most brilliant American writers in our time. A fine set. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0061768065.

Synopsis

David Wroblewski grew up in rural Wisconsin, not far from the Chequamegon National Forest where the novel is set. He earned an MFA from the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers. This is his first novel.

Reviews

On Aug 5 2017, a reader said:
I found this book to be one of those rare finds in the life of an avid reader that stays with the you and impacts your life. I love the style and pace of writing in Edgar Sawtelle to be engaging and almost dream like. I read it in hardcover first and then listened to it 3 more times since then on Audible. Richard Poe's narration was one of the best I've heard in this format. The tone of his voice and the ability to sound younger, older, male and female was seamless. He clearly grasped the mood of this book. Overall I'm adding this work by Wroblewski to my small list of life time favorite books that I know I will share with others and read again and again over the years.
