About This Item
London: TM for G Bedell and T Collins, 1652. First edition. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 6" by 3.5". None. The first edition of this very scarce work observing the French royal family, military force and customs by noted diarist, John Evelyn. The first edition, with the engraved monogram of John Evelyn to the title page. The monogram is entwined with oak and bay leaves. Keynes notes it is possible that copies with the engraved vignette were printed for the author to give his friends. Keynes does not assign priority in printing regarding the copies with the engraved vignettes and those without. With the bookplate of Robert S Pirie (1934-2015) to the front pastedown. Pirie was an Emerican lawyer from Chicago who had an extensive collection of books and manuscripts. From the estate of John Lawson (1932-2019), the antiquarian bookseller who had a long and illustrious career. ESTC R12269; Keynes 3; Wing E3515.With the signature A-F12, G11. 'The State of France' draws from Evelyn's personal experiences and observations during his time in France. It looks at the royal family, the court, the officials, military forces and customs of France. Evelyn spent a lot of time in France and he married the daughter of the English ambassador in France. Evelyn is a noted diarist, known for his detail in his famed memoir which spanned from 1640 to 1706. A smart copy of this work. In a full, contemporary calf binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the spine and to the extremities. Small section of the leather to the spine is lifting slightly. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Small hole to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Small worm hole to the outer margin of pages 5-24, not affecting the text. Pages are bright with just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed
