143pp. Jacket tattered, and with writing on front flap. Winner of the Stalin Prize in 1947. Kazakevich was writer; before the war primarily in Yiddish. In the war he had combat roles, and was the head of an army reconnaissance detachment at the conquest of Berlin. This novel is of a successful mission but subsequent destruction of a reconnaissance unit behind enemy lines. Highly regarded.
