The First UK printing published by Gollancz, London in 1963. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. A little pushing at the lower spine tip. Very light fading of the blue colouring to the spine but none of the toning and ghosting usually encountered with this title. The gilt lettering remains bright. A hint of rubbing to the lower cover edges with very slight toning to the extreme upper edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Some toning and spotting to the text-block with a little encroachment onto the outer page edges in places. Light spotting to the prelims and rear endpapers. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Correctly priced at 18/- net to the lower front flap. A little edge-wear at the spine ends and some light age related markings. There is no fading of colouring to the spine. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been double signed, located and dated by the author to the title page : 'John Le Carre a.k.a David Cornwell, 19 Nov 2019, Cornwall'. An exceptional copy and very rare to find with such attributes. The late author whose real name was David Cornwell, lived in Cornwall up until his recent death. Le Carre's masterpiece which was successfully adapted for film with Richard Burton in the lead role. The book won a 1963 'Gold Dagger' award from the Crime Writers' Association for 'Best Crime Novel'. Two years later the USA edition was awarded the 'Edgar Award' from the 'Mystery Writers of America' for 'Best Mystery Novel'. It was the first work to win the award for 'Best Novel' from both mystery writing organisations. Screenwriters Paul Dehn and Guy Trosper, who adapted the book for the 1965 movie, received an Edgar the following year for 'Best Motion Picture Screenplay' for an American movie. In 2005, the fiftieth anniversary of the Dagger Awards, 'The Spy Who Came In from the Cold' was awarded the 'Dagger of Daggers', a one-time award given to the Golden Dagger winner regarded as the stand-out among all fifty winners over the history of the Crime Writers' Association. Housed in a custom solander box with gilt titling and velvet inserts. Highly collectible. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
