In January 1847 J Y Simpson began pioneering the use of ether as an anaesthetic in his midwifery practice, but by November of that year he was relying more on chloroform, which produced safer and more reliable results. In the United States Dr Charles Meigs was a strong opponent of the use of anaesthesia in midwifery. In 1848 he raised his objections and concerns about its use in response to a paper promoting and advocating chloroform in childbirth, by Simpson. Brown leather binding with maroon title plate, gilt banding, decoration and title on the spine. Embossed decoration with gilt edge line on both boards.

Quarter-calf, front hinge shows wear but firm. Particulars in gilt to spine; raised bands. Some passages underlined in blue ink and name stamp "Servando Diego Jr." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 601 pages; All shipments through USPS insured Priority Mail.

1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire.
