This second edition was printed by Elzevier. Pages are generally clean. A bibliographical note (listing several references) and an old ownership inscription - "ex bibliotheca Kripperdorfia" - are written in old hand on the front blank. The Monarchia solipsorum is bitter satire written against the Jesuits which, in its day, caused quite a sensation. The author describes a secret society of "Solipsen" (those who wish to govern entirely) understood to mean the Jesuits. The supposed laws, secret instructions and clandestine operations of the organization are discussed. The author's name is given as Lucius Cornelius Europaeus which is a pseudonym. London: T.C. Newby, 1859. First edition. Hardcover. 8vo. pp. iv, 143, [1], [16 pages adverts]. Bound in blue bind stamped publisher’s cloth with gilt title on the front cover. The binding is tight but the extremities display some rubbing and wear; a small professional repair is present to the bottom hinge of the rear cover. Interior pages are generally clean but a miniscule (5 mm) tear is located at the bottom of p. ii and the upper corner of page 11 is creased. The advertisement section in the rear is printed on a slightly different paper stock and shows some age-toning, spotting etc. Catherine Crowe (1790-1872) was a British author best known for her influential first book on the supernatural entitled “The night-side of nature" (London, 1848). Crowe, however, also wrote several other books dealing with ghosts and mysterious phenomena including this uncommon essay on spiritualism. The author states in her preface: “I do not insist on people’s believing in Spiritualism; I only urge them not to shut their eyes to it; and, I hope, shew cause why each should investigate it for himself.” [Besterman, p. 97].

Description:
binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.Inv. # 63672 NOAB* bds 9/2023
