New York: William Gowans, 1862.. 1862.. Good. - Octavo, brown cloth with an oval vignette & 4 stars stamped in gilt on the front cover & in blind on the rear cover. There is a large piece out of the head & tail & the right side of the spine and most of the gilt titling is lacking. The rear joint is split. The covers are bumped & rubbed. x & pages [11]-303 & [7] pages. There is some staining to the title & occasional light foxing. Despite the loss of cloth on the spine, this is a good tight copy. <p>First American edition.<p>From the library of Leonard Charles Van Noppen with his signature dated 1903 on the front endpaper. Van Noppen [1865-1935] was a Dutch-born, American-educated academic, translator and poet, who, as a member of the United States Naval Reserves authored "The Challenge: War Chants of the Allies, Wise and Otherwise". Below Van Noppen's signature, is inscribed in pencil: "Presented to the Editor of the Churchman by the Publisher".
