About This Item

Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, Booksellers to Her Majesty, 1842. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. Very good. Some wear to edges and corners of boards, a bit of wear at joints and hinges, but binding is firm. Lovely contemporary tree calf leather binding with gilt filagree around the edges, and gilt ON the edges as well (see image). Endpapers and edges of textblock attractively marbeled. Spine has lovely and intricate gilt designs with original labels. The exact same style of binding can be seen on 2 other volumes of speeches we have listed here, by Grattan and Curran. viii, 520 p. A very attractive edition of this collection of British political and legal speeches by Lord Campbell, who became Lord Chancellor of Ireland, a member of the House of Lords and later in 1850 appointed as Lord Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench. He ended his career as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. One of his most famous cases was the prosecution of John Frost, a Chartist leader who participated in the attack on the town of Newport, and was found guilty of treason. His speech against Frost is in this volume, as are speeches on the Irish and English Churches, prosecutions for blasphemy, equity reform, parliamentary privilege, registration of deeds, the adultery trial of Prime Minister Melbourne, and more. As Baron Campbell chose these speeches himself for his brother, we can presume they are ones he thought of highly.
