Moderate tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Wear marks overall.

In two volumes, complete. 414; 432 pp. Very handsomely bound in a modern 3/4 morocco with cloth sides; 5 raised bands over spines and decorative gilt details stamped to compartments. Each volume with complete front matter, including extra engraved title pages and engraved fronti plates. Moderate foxing to engraved front matter, and foxing and toning as expected to the page stock. Text printed in two columns. Superficial rubbing over the raised bands at spine which are perhaps a trifle sunned. VG ... Oversize book likely to require additional charges for expedited or international shipping. .

1860. Hardcover. JOSEPH ADDISON AND RICHARD STEELE. COLLECTIBLE HB Very Good No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 3/4 leather with marbled boards, end papers, and top, bottom and fore edge. The edges, especially cover corners, are worn. There is minimal cracking on spine on Vol III: Vol I is missing part of the Spectator title; the leather inserts for Spectator are missing from Vols II and IV. The binding is tight and the pages are clean. I found minimal foxing. The page facing the title page of volume one had a penciled price with some word below(at 5.50 it was obviously old). I was able to erase the price but part of the words did not erase easily, so I left it as is.

Each volume with engraved title-page and frontispiece by Francis Hayman, "the most proficient English illustrator of his time" (Gordon N. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, p. 5). Old ownership inscription of Mr. Hambly to f.f.e.p. in each volume. Minor shelfwear and rubbing to extremities, minor partial crack to rear joint of first volume, contents clean and crisp, generally a a very pretty set. The Spectator, "one of the most triumphant literary projects of the age transforming periodical writing in English" (ODNB entry for Addison), was a periodical published daily by Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele, both politicians, which was one of the bestsellers of the 18th century.
