Chicago: R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co, 1909. First Edition. Octavo. In two volumes. 414pp. and 460pp. Not only did Houck write the first comprehensive accounts of Missouri's territorial period but he has provided translations of the rarest documents from the original Spanish. He also included papers on the questionable grant to Col. George Morgan at the mouth of the Ohio. The author has been called the father of Missouri historiography although he was not a professional historian. His work as the major figure in railroad development in the state and is almost as well known. He was later the founder of Southeast Missouri State Teacher's College. The best begining place for the documents on the early history of Missouri. Bound in 1/2 light green cloth over dark green cloth, black spine labels gilt, top edges gilt, corners bumped, some light fading, soiling or rubbing., [Howes H-672].
