The Southern mystique by Zinn, Howard - 1964

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. Hardcover. 267p., first edition, very good condition in an edge worn dj with minor chipping and a few closed tears and a slightly faded spine. This least-known of Zinn's works is in many ways the most important, dealing with the subject of race relations in the South, with a particular focus on white racism and --- to borrow a phrase from our own day --- the social construction of race. His chapter on African Americans in particular seeks to demystify an entire race, and combines with the following chapter on the civil rights struggles in Albany to suggest the necessity of white recognition of the humanity of blacks, as well as their political viability.
