The text is illustrated with black-and-white contemporary photographs and black-and-white illustrations by Ian Smythe, as a 16 page insert between pages 132 and 133. 1/4 red coloured cloth covered backstrip with black coloured titles. 3/4 red coloured boards. Illustrated dustwrapper with blue and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white photograph of author to the rear dustwrapper panel. The biography of the man born Eduard Carl Oscar Theodore Schnitzler, but better-known as Emin Pasha. Born in Germany then fleeing to Turkey after finding out he was a Jew, converting to the Muslim faith and ending up in Africa. Whilst in Africa, he joined up with General 'Chinese' Gordon's Army and was the last of Gordon's lieutenants to hold out against the Muslim Messiah Mahdi uprising at Waldelai in the late 1880s. When the powers that be back in London learnt of the extent of the uprising they sent H. M. Stanley to rescue Emin Pasha. This book goes into the personality of Emin Pasha, and why it was imperative that the authorties in London to send Stanley to rescue (who, chose an unexplored and dangerous route to get to Emin Pasha, losing the majority of his men through disease and attack by a hostile natives), and then the trek out of the besieged area, fraught as the arrogant Stanley and the Democratic Emin held sway over their own men, and the final death of a gentle and scholarly man.
