London: Engraved by Saml. & Natl. Buck and Published according to Act of Parliament, No. 1 Garden Court, Middle Temple, 1745. Engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild rippling and creasing, and a bit of minor mat burn. A spectacular panoramic view of Worksop Manor, the sprawling family seat of the Duke of Norfolk. Between 1720 and 1752, Samuel Buck and his younger brother Nathaniel toured England and Wales to record the castles and abbeys that scattered the countryside. Their detailed views provide an invaluable record of England's architectural antiquities, offering, in some cases, the only trace of ruined or lost buildings. Nathaniel and Samuel executed over 400 views in addition to 100 general views of English and Welsh cities. These detailed panoramas remain some of their most sought-after works, providing a fascinating view of England's most prominent cities. The Worksop Manor pictured here, a superb example of Elizabethan architecture, burnt down in 1761, not… Read More

From 1720 onwards, first Samuel and then the two brothers toured England, drawing views of the cities and towns, castles, antiquities (particularly ruined monasteries) and other landmarks. They financed publication of this bold project by soliciting advance subscriptions. The crowning achievement of their long career, the most ambitious single view they had undertaken, is this highly important prospect of London taken from the River Thames drawn from five vantage points, and then blended into one continuous panorama, extending from Westminster Bridge downstream to London Bridge and the Tower of London. The subscription, originally conceived on four sheets, was announced thus, "London,… Read More
