Hardcover. Green cloth with titles stamped in gilt on front boards and spine. xxii, 430 pp. Many illustrations and photographs, though lacking the two maps at rear. The author was a "naturalist of an expedition sent by the United States Government in 1889 to the west coast of Africa"...and "collector, big-game hunter, gold seeker, landowner, citizen, and soldier" in Rhodesia, largely now the modern state of Zimbabwe. From the frontispiece illustration depicting the author shooting an African to disparaging descriptions of "the natives" and their resistance to their "transition from barbarism to civilization", it's a detailed, contemporary account of colonial paternalism and imperialism. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
