London: Martin Secker, First edition 1916.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 324 pages. Original maroon cloth in good tight clean condition, lettered and ruled in black Top edge slightly dusty Front pastedown with two neat owners' signatures. Endpapers slightly browned. Dustjacket, unclipped, with only minor wear and rubbing to edges. The spine slightly browned. Despite these minor blemishes the volume presents very well. Important first novel by Welsh author Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan, 1870-1948. A rare dystopian science fiction work in which a vellum scroll is found in a metal cylinder in the Andes. This relates the dystopian history of the miniature planet Meleager, where the practice of eugenics ensures the death of defective children and where women have no power or political rights A rare book with a possible influence on Charlotte Haldane's Man's World and feminist dystopian literature generally, especially in the areas of eugenics and male patriarchy

Description:
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing) of the author's first book. 8vo. 499pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine. Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..

Description:
The first edition PAN X434 was published in the UK in 1965 with a cover by Raymond Hawkey and "Not for sale in the in the UK", 250,000 copies were printed in July 1965.The second edition of PAN X434 were printed in 1966 and shipped with a movie tie-in cover replacing the Hawkey scorpion and pearl cover. PAN Books had remaining stock of the first printing of 1965 with the Hawkey cover and applied a wrap of the movie tie-in edition to the remaining 1965 copies.
There is no record as to how many of these variants were shipped by PAN, the majority of the authentic variants discovered over the years have been found in Australia.
This a good unread copy, has tanned pages and foxing. The foxing is on the inside of the cover and first page, first page has a vertical tanning section where the wrap faces, this tanning supports the authenticity of this being the actual book shipped with the wrapper and not swapped out for another copy, there is a remains clipping to the front cover. The back cover has foxing… Read More

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
