New York: Harper & Brothers Franklin Square. No Edition Stated . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 7 1/2" X 5. circa 1880's. Frontis: tissue protected b/w portrait of author by A. Weger sc. Leipzig over presumed faux signature written with no break between first and surname. Light brown cloth covered boards have black line edging on front panel, black text on spine. Corners very slightly scuffed, spine ends rubbed. Book is very slightly cocked, spine darkened and covers lightly soiled. Preface :" The substance of this book has already appeared under the same title in Cornhill Magazine ( of which author was the editor), but the work has been recast, and now appears, with additions, in a somewhat different and, it is hoped, an approved form." 205 pp. plus 10 pp. of Valuable and Interesting Works for Public and Private Libraries, Published by Harper & Brothers, New York.
