Description:
Leather bound four volume set as pictured. Gils Blas recounts the education and swashbuckling adventures of an adaptable young valet as he progresses from one master to the next, making his way from naive youth to cunning servant to landed proprietor and nobleman--with a stint in jail, bereavements, and fits of remorse along the way. Finally, our hero learns compassion and achieves tranquillity in a life in the country. This edition was published in 1750. A penciled note in volume 1 states that this was the first edition of the translation by Smollett. All four books have the gilt seal of Groton School embossed on the front board. Bindings are firm in all. Leather boards are very worn and scuffed. Front boards are detached in volumes 1 and 2 and quite loose in volumes 3 and 4. Spines with raised bands and gold stamping are dry and crumbling. Endpapers are tanned. Text is tanned but very readable. A few pages have pencil notations. Your purchase helps support our small village library. sON4

Description:
441 Pages. This is a very old (1771) book in what looks like its original leather bindings about a man in the 17th-century Spanish Court and his adventures there. The book's exterior is all leather and has worn areas on all edges and corners, along both verticle edges of the spine, and has some worn and darkened areas on both front and rear covers. On the spine itself, the leather is dried out and cracking and there is a piece at the very bottom that has been worn off of it. The interior book has past owners' names (including one from 1774) as well as other marks on the inside front and rear pages, foxing throughout the book, and light browning on all of the pages. This being said, however, the printing throughout the book has remained preserved and completely readable and the book is still completely attached to its cover and thus the bindings have not separated and are still tight and sound. If you purchase this antique book from us, it will be carefully wrapped up, padded, and then boxed and shipped…

Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
