For well over a hundred years, before the days of photography, itinerant painters wandered through the American countryside with a roll of canvas and brushes and palette strapped to their backs, to perpetuate the faces of the living, and sometimes of the dead, with their crude, spontaneous artistry. This book -- the first in its field -- tells the story of New England folk portraits and of the artists who made them. It is illustrated with one hundred and ten excellent reproductions of folk portraits.
