Copperplates (47 full-page numbered but with pl 35 & 37 replaced in good facsimile) + nice large plate of public dissection on TP + 50 large woodcut initials with country & hunting scenes etc.. Folio (378x251mm) newer calf with 5 raised bands, spine compartments gilt, gilt rules, black label with gilt titling. Titlepage in red & black XXVIII +79pp +[x] index & publisher's catalogue + 47 leaves of plates ex collation but numbered in the plate 1-47 (a4 mistakenly bound after b4). Bookplate of Dr.F.A. Sondervorst on marbled endpapers. A clean wide margined copy, no tears, very unobtrusive pale foxing to a few pages, some pages rehinged at gutter, a few with marginal dusting/damp marks but not affecting printed area except in index. New York: McDonnell Bros., 1866 Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Large brown two-volume Civil War book set with a gilt cover title. Five inch top spine cover chip and a one and one half inch bottom spine chip to volume 1. Volume 2 has a top chip/slight gouge at the spine top and a small chip at the bottom spine. Covers with light to moderate worming. Shaken and cracked bindings with a few loose pages and some old taped tears. The first 8 pages (from the title page) to the second volume are loose from binding and present. Fair minus to Fair plus condition. About 16-1/2 x 12 with 836 total pages. Illustrated, plus maps. Rare two-volume Civil War set (1866 and 1868)! .

First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Original maroon cloth in good tight clean condition, lettered and ruled in black Top edge slightly dusty Front pastedown with two neat owners' signatures. Endpapers slightly browned. Dustjacket, unclipped, with only minor wear and rubbing to edges. The spine slightly browned. Despite these minor blemishes the volume presents very well. Important first novel by Welsh author Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan, 1870-1948. A rare dystopian science fiction work in which a vellum scroll is found in a metal cylinder in the Andes. This relates the dystopian history of the miniature planet Meleager, where the practice of eugenics ensures the death of defective children and where women have no power or political rights A rare book with a possible influence on Charlotte Haldane's Man's World and feminist dystopian literature generally, especially in the areas of eugenics and male patriarchy
