New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1887.. 1887.. Good. - Small octavo, navy blue cloth. The binding is rubbed & bumped with a tiny hole in the cloth of the front cover. The head & tail of the spine are slightly chipped. iii & 380 pages. There is pencil scribbling on the front endpaper. The page edges are slightly darkened & there is occasional minor foxing. Good. <p>First edition.<p>Among the subjects of this collection of essays are trade unions; cooperative production, credit and distribution; guilds and modern commercial associations; the prevention of intemperance; moral education in schools; the religious aspect of socialism; and communism.<p>Richard Heber Newton was a prominent American Episcopalian priest and writer. From 1869 to 1902 he was rector of All Souls' Protestant Episcopal Church in New York City. He was a leader in the Social Gospel movement and a supporter of Higher Criticism of the Bible, and sought to unify Christan Churches in the United States.
