The Scottish novelist Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) felt duty-bound to advance Hume's "History" to a more recent era. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of Volume II only of an eight-volume set. Full leather binding; two black labels; with titling and decorations in gilt. Clean text; 389 pages; with two engraved plates. The text is exceptionally bright, clear, and supple. Typically rubbed at the margins; bumped; chip to head of spine. Starting to split at the edges of the spine, but holding nicely. Despite these flaws, the book is attractive, with a nice presence..
