Boston: Whipple and Damrell. Poor with no dust jacket; Textblock detached from boards, boards heavily worn and soiled, foxing, backstrip split. 1840. Second Edition. Two volumes in one. Patterned cloth spine with printed paper label and brown paper-covered boards. 123; 115pp. Owner name (Arza B. Keith) penciled on front free endpaper. Wright Vol. I, No. 1188. This early anti-slavery novel was originally published in 1836, and in the authors preface, he notes that the mercantile embarrassments of the times (the Panic of 1837 and subsequent economic recession) prevented the publication of this second edition until 1840. According to Randy Weinstein's 1996 catalogue, Against the Tide: Commentaries on a Collection of African Americana, 1711-1987, the book was intentionally published anonymously to seem like a slave narrative rather than as the work of fiction it is "to bequeath abolitiionists with a weapon more destructive to the South." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
