The publisher's plain white dust jacket has age toning and two 4" closed tears, light soiling, in a mylar cover. 4to. ix, 78pp.

The sketches of San Francisco, Sacramento, and Stockton are among the earliest known, as are those of Sutter's Fort and Mill. "M'Ilvaine arrived in San Francisco from Callao, Peru, on June 1 and left on November 1, 1849, on board the steamer California.
