About This Item

Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1887. SEE PHOTOS. A gorgeous copy of the scarce FIRST CONTINENTAL EDITION (Todd & Bowden #2440). Very Fine condition -- unusually fresh and attractive. Beautifully bound with brown morocco spine and corners, lettered in shiny gold over a handsome red leather spine label. There are six gilt-decorated raised bands on spine. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. All edges are red speckled. Pages are creamy white, clean, crisp and unmarked. NO foxing. 4.5" wide by 6.25" tall. In 1996, Broadfoot CIVIL WAR BOOKS, A PRICED CHECKLIST valued the First London Edition at $500.00, and First American Edition at $400.00. But Broadfoot didn't mention this First Continental Edition, which was issued the same year as the American. NOT a library discard. NO owner's name or bookplate. Autobiography of Admiral Hobart Pasha (Augustus Charles Hobart-Hampden, 1822-1886) a British Royal Navy officer, and winner of the Victoria Cross. Recounted here are his service to England, adventures as a blockade runner during the Confederate War, experiences tracking down slavers, fighting for the Ottoman Empire, etc. Among the chapter titles are: Perils by Sea and Land: Rio de Janeiro; Slaver Hunting; In the Baltic; Blockade-Running; A Visit to Charleston; Never Caught!; Richmond during the Siege, The Land Blockade, I Enter the Turkish Navy; The War with Russia, Sport in Turkey; etc. Frontispiece portrait. Nevins, CIVIL WAR BOOKS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY 226: "A highly interesting, frank, and authoritative account by a successful blockade-runner." Harwell, IN TALL COTTON, THE 200 MOST IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE BOOKS 91: "Very interesting, forthright account of a successful blockade runner." Coulter, TRAVELS IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES, A BIBLIOGRAPHY 236: "As part of an exciting life, the author became a blockade runner during the Civil War, using Wilmington as his port of entrance. In 1863 he made a train trip from this port to Charleston and the following year to Richmond. Both experiences are recorded.". First Continental Edition. Hardcover. Very Fine condition. 288pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
