Jackson and her family lived in the community of Burlingame, California, an affluent middle-class suburb that would feature in this her first novel which like her later novels was characterised by her use of a realistic setting for a tale with elements of horror and the occult.

Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Signed by O'Neill in black ink. Though not indicated, this volume is from the library of T. R. Smith, chief editor and adviser at Liveright throughout its heyday in the 1920s and responsible for publishing some of O'Neill's works (including an early volume of one-act plays and Strange Interlude in 1928). Trilogy of plays containing Homecoming, The Hunted, and The Haunted. Includes Working Notes and Extracts from a fragmentary work diary, facsimile pages inserted in rear pocket. Included in Harry Furniss's Christmas Annual, 1905, here re-bound in green cloth with a cover label giving the title and author, this was Furniss's first annual, illustrated by him, contents page either laid in loosely or dis-bound, Shaw's very successful play is the first offering, also includes A Wedding Gift by H. Rider Haggard, affixed to the front free endpaper is brief note Signed by Shaw of some mystery dated 17 Jan, 1902, to wit: "Told you so!/Thanks for the cheque./What is K's address? There/are more ways of killing a dog/than hanging him, and I think/I'll venture a fresh attempt on my/own account./This, in dreadful secrecy/G. Bernard Shaw"). Remnants of bookplate removal on front free endpaper, binding a bit loose.

First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 284pp. Black cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gold-stamped decoration to the upper board. With decorated endpapers, a title page decoration, a frontispiece and twelve Henderson tailpiece decorations. Top edge lightly dust marked and spotted, others untrimmed. A narrow strip of browning to the free endpapers and a touch of soiling to the pastedowns. A very good copy in the most uncommon dust wrapper which reproduces a larger version of the frontispiece design; the wrapper is price-clipped, tanned at the spine panel, a little marked, spotted and stained in places with a tiny sliver of loss from the head of the spine panel, just a fraction of further loss from the tail and several more millimetres of loss from the corner tips and upper edge. The book consists of first edition sheets of the two earlier books with a new half-title and title-leaf for the volume. Rebacked with original spine laid down, nick to top edge of rear board skillfully and professionally repaired. A scarce early Pound volume. Gallup A7b.

Condition: VG+. First edition, second issue with tipped in title page (as expected). 327 pp. followed by two leaves of ads. Light bumping to corners and spine ends. Previous owner's stamp to FFEP and an owner's bookplate affixed to rear of first color plate. Solid and square book. Front pastedown has some cracking at hinge.

Knopf, 1995. 1st Edition. . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition stated. Sm 4to. 652 pp. One quarter cloth and black paper-covered boards. Silver lettering to the spine. Volume is fine. Jacket has a little bit of crimping at the top of the front panel at the spine fold, else fine. Inscribed to the author Ron Hansen on the tile page: "For Ron, with good luck especially in the movies. William H. Gass." Gass was likely referring to Hansen's novel, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford which was made into a movie starring Brad Pitt. Hansen recently sold many of his books to a Palo Alto bookseller including this one.
