Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. First printing. With the ownership signature of Harrison B. Tordoff at the top of the half-title page. A nice association copy, as Tordoff was a prominent ornithologist and conservationist. He was the head of the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota. A finch expert, he was also dedicated to the conservation of the endangered Kirtland's warbler and, especially, peregrine falcons. He was responsible for the reintroduction of peregrines to the upper Mississippi River region via the Midwest Peregrine Restoration Project which he founded. He helped hatch more than 1,200 peregrine chicks. Peregrines were of course the unfortunate poster bird for species that declined due to eggshell thinning from DDT, the pernicious chemical that is the subject of Silent Spring.
