About This Item
Aylett, VA. unbound. very good. Exceptional signature: "B.B. Douglas - Aylett - Virginia", executed on a 5.5" x 2" slip of paper, and most likely written during his tenure as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Fine condition.

American politician from Virginia who also saw service as a Confederate military officer and member of the Confederate States of America Senate. His uncle was John Taylor, 10th President of the United States. Douglas entered Confederate military service as a Lieutenant in Company H, 9th Virginia Cavalry (later popularly called R.E. Lee's Rangers). His service in the General Assembly forced him to take a leave of absence from the regiment between November 1861 and February 1862. In March 1862, Douglas began recruiting a company of Rangers and became Major of the 5th Virginia Cavalry. He saw service for several months but again, due to his obligations in the Confederate Senate, he was forced to tenure his resignation from military service. From 1861 until 1865 he chaired the important Senate Committee on Military Affairs, and during the 1861-1862 Assembly and its extra emergency session, he also served on the Joint Committee on the Armory.
