London: J. B. Nichols and Son. 1828. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Full calf rebacked and recornered with five raised bands on spine, gilt titles in second compartment and the other compartments with blind tooled decoration, boards with gilt fillet border and blind tooled decoration, aeg, marbled endpapers with bookplate on front pastedown, tissue guarded coloured frontis, title page printed in red and black, text illustrated with the arms of the nobles present at the siege and these nicely hand coloured, internally clean and bright. The poem "Siege of Carlaverock" is the only contemporary record of the seige of that castle in July 1300. This account is thought to have been written by the Fransiscan, Walter of Exeter and is noteworthy for several reasons. Perhaps firstly because it provides contemporary desciptions of the appearance and equipment of a late 13th century army and the manner in which they set about besieging a castle. It also contains the accurate blazon of over 100 peers of the realm, here reproduced in colour. The book presents a history of the castle itself, followed by the poem, the original text with the translation on the facing page, with the last section made up of short biographies of the worthies mentioned in the poem. Carlaverock castle is a triangular moated castle in south west Scotland. The siege of the castle in 1300 eventually ended, when having held up the might of the English army for some considerable time, the garrison of just sixty men finally surrendered. , Folio , xxxii + 380 pp .

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
