The revised second edition was published by Addison-Wesley in 1993 and then by McGill-Queen's University Press in 2000. According to the authors "important sections have been rewritten for this edition, especially those dealing with the recent past. Our periodization has been refined, particularly in dividing the period from the 1930s. We have increased the number of illustrations, improved and updated the bibliography, and have tried to simplify language and terms." One poignant (saignant?) phrase in the new preface is that "many in Canada are deeply frustrated with Quebec's insistence on the primacy of French language and collective rights, and with what is perceived as its violation of the principles of tolerance and liberal democracy."
