London: The Car Illustrated, 1907. About fine.. First edition of this lively popular history of aeronautics, from Daedalus to the Wright brothers, with a particular emphasis on historical ballooning anecdotes of the most sensational kind.

This book's chapters gather stories of flight both failed and successful, from the terrible fireworks accident in Madame Blanchard's "luminous balloon" and the double-balloon blunderbuss air duel of two slighted Parisians, to the development of scientific theories of winged flight and the invention of pedalled flapping-machines, to the dawn of zeppelins, dirigibles, and rigid airships. Capped with selected "Aerial poems and quotations, " including an anonymous ode to the "Pony Named Rose" who ascended in Mr. Green's balloon over Vauxhall Gardens and came down safely again. With contributions by Major B. Baden-Powell, aviation enthusiast and brother of Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell.
