Shanghai, 1945. Very good condition. Compelling original watercolor painting on paper, signed and dated at the lower left, by noted American artist, Fred Fredden-Goldberg (1889 - 1973). Little is known about the artist, except that he fled Nazi persecution in Europe around 1938, surviving in the Shanghai Jewish ghetto during the war before emigrating to the US and settling in San Francisco around 1946. In Shanghai he painted these scenes of everyday life. Depicting a fisherman with one hand on his net, the other steering the large oar on his sampan, the traditional flat bottomed boats of Shanghai, with decorative painted panel on the stern. 7 3/4 x 10". Tipped on to larger sheet; painted signature and date.
