Very good in a very good dj (endpapers have been replaced rather clumsily, but otherwise book is very tight and clean - green cloth is bright and unfaded, dj has a chip missing from the top of the spine, affecting Ellison's name, but is otherwise in very good condition. . First printing. Second book by the author of "The Invisible Man." Consists of essays written from 1945 until publication on three general themes: literature and folklore; African American musical expression, especially jazz and blues, and the "complex relationship between the Negro American subculture and the North American culture as a whole." Thought-provoking and lucidly expressed.
