First printing. Second book by the author of "The Invisible Man." Consists of essays written from 1945 until publication on three general themes: literature and folklore; African American musical expression, especially jazz and blues, and the "complex relationship between the Negro American subculture and the North American culture as a whole." Thought-provoking and lucidly expressed.
