About This Item
New York: Carlton & Porter, 1856. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Brown ornately blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. 394pp, 4pp ads, 6pp ads. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, 6 called-for full-page plates. Good plus. Binding edgeworn, mainly at head and tail of sunned spine; nicely tight and handleable, with text block moderately age toned, with some mottling and foxing throughout. W.P. Strickland edits this later ("Twentieth Thousand") printing of a popular account of ministering on the tough streets of the rough-and-tumble, churchless early streets of San Francisco. Decent, very serviceable copy. Taylor (1821-1902) was a Methodist Episcopal who moved to San Francisco in 1849, but also did missionary work in Africa and India, authoring a handful of evangelistic titles.
