The wartime autobiography of a man who was a Staff Officer but who spent a great deal of the war doing rather difficult things in dangerous places. Green cloth-covered boards, gilt titles to spine, maps across endpapers, 262 pages, khaki coloured dust jacket. Condition notes: Dust jacket worn, soiled and with translucent tape repair, obituary pasted in to front free endpaper, boards faded, especially the spine strip, and somewhat bumped. Previous owner's name to front free endpaper, but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked.

Boots library rebind with associated stickers and markings to pages and boards. Severe cracking to hinges causing boards to be loose. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Wear marks overall.

Jonathan Cape, 1948. Hardcover. Good. 1948. Second impression. 262 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Maps across endpapers. Introduction by the Earl Wavell. Pages remain bright and clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Binding remains firm. Text block edges notably foxed with slight water marks. A few small liquid droplet marks to pastedowns. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine which has some small black spots also. Gilt lettering to spine is slightly dulled. A few liquid droplet marks.

Clean pages with mild tanning and moderate foxing to endpapers. Tightly bound with faint thumb-marking throughout. Traces of pink paper stuck to penultimate leaf, which has left notable scuffing and slight blue marks. Droplet stain to fore edge. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Notable stain to tail of spine. Book has forward lean. Gilt is bright. Unclipped jacket has moderate edgewear with chips, tears, and creasing. Moderate water staining to spine, droplets to panels. Slight loss to spine ends. Moderate rubbing and marking all over. Moderate sunning to spine. Slight blue marks to rear. Creased rear flap.
