Second Growth by Stegner, Wallace - 1947

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1947. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. Octavo size, 240 pp. inscribed by Wallace Stegner. Inscribed by Stegner: "For David, for / his collection. / Wallace Stegner". Three linked stories based on what Stegner observed in the town he and his wife used as their summer residence, Greensboro, Vermont. The advertisement for the forthcoming book in Publisher's Weekly of 1947 stated "A story of summer in a northern New Hampshire village, a summer of emotional crisis for individuals among the villagers and summer people".

___DESCRIPTION: Green cloth boards with navy blue box displaying title in reverse, author's last name in navy blue, same design on spine, plain endpapers, two-page map of the "Town of Westwick" prior to the half-title page. Dust jacket design by John Costigan, pictorial front, author picture and blurb on the back, Second Growth summary on front flap and One Nation blurb on back flap, original price of $2.75 on left jacket flap.

___CONDITION: Volume is in very good+ condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, clearly having been protected by the dust jacket as the boards are clean, the corners are square with minimal rubbing, and the colors are bright. The sole prior owner marking is a name written in ink above the author's inscription (name different from that in the inscription). Internal pages are in near fine condition, although there is some foxing; this was a cheaply-produced book (WWII had just ended) and is seldom found in collectible condition. The dust jacket, although present, is in fair condition only - there is fairly substantial overall edgewear and soiling, with some old dampstaining, more visible on the verso but also visible on the back panel; please see pictures and request more if needed.
