This volume includes lectures on optics, vision, telescopies and miscroscopes, areas of the author's specialization. The 10 plates all illustrate aspects of optics. In Very Good- Condition: lacking original spine label; tissue repair of joints and hinges; faint dampstain along lower edge of a few plates; plate IV has a separation of 2 cm. from upper edge along a fold, and plate X one of 3 cm.; some foxing on plates; otherwise, clean and tight.

This article by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was read before the Society on Nov. 16, 1832. Bache was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and the grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he taught engineering there and became a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He was a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843 and also served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death. "18" in ink at upper right-hand corner of title page. Caption title. Publication information from library records. Robert Emmet Monaghan (1822-1895) was a Pennsylvania lawyer and represented Chester County in the state legislature. His mechanical vote counter was patented on March 14, 1848. This pamphlet reports on the demonstration of the machine given to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1849. Ink notations on p. 3 correct the description of the levers indicating Yea and Nay votes. In Very Good- Condition: first leaf and last leaf are detached but present; light foxing on p. 8; otherwise, clean.
