She published her first story in 1971 at the age of 50. Her stories revolve around the terrible choices that the Jews had to make during the Nazi era and the hardships of Holocaust survivors after the war. There is an immediacy in the telling which suggests an urgent impulse regulated by the discipline of the short form; a series of discrete incidents are built into something profoundly resonant. This is superbly but subtly crafted writing.
