About This Item

DENSLOW, W[illiam] W[allace]. Scarecrow and Tin-Man. Illustrated by Mary and Wallace Stover after Denslow. Slovenly Peter. NY: Perks Publishing [1946]. 8vo, [24]pp. Color pictorial paper wrappers. Two-color illustrations on every page. Sheets aged, as always, else an unusually fine copy with crease to lower front corner and minute edge wear.

First edition thus. Eight vintage children's tales illustrated by the Stovers. The title story for this collection was originally published in 1904 by G.W. Dillingham, telling the story of the two titular characters as they escape from the Broadway theater where they are appearing. Denslow created this work, which makes no reference to Baum's story – just the Broadway show – as part of their on-going dispute due to their sharing the copyright on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This 1946 edition features new artwork modeled after Denslow to accompany the story, as well as seven other stories of the "cautionary tale" genre including Slovenly Peter and Slovenly Betsy. Beinvenue p. 148.
